Family Literacy

A commitment to early childhood and lifelong learning

Parents have a place to go to work on their education while their children are involved in a learning environment – thanks to the CSIU family literacy program.

Operated in Bloomsburg, Milton and Selinsgrove the centers offer a site to support parents as they work to achieve their personal goals: to obtain a diploma, get a job, or learn to read to their kids or help them with homework. Meanwhile, their children (from birth to grade 3) learn through play activities.

“The educational need varies from parent to parent,” said Julie Shumaker, CSIU adult education program manager. “Our highly qualified adult education providers help them realize their individual goals.”

For example, parents may need help preparing for the GED® test or are learning English as a second language. They may be in the program for a few months or for a few years, depending on their needs. The program addresses the literacy needs of all members of the family while promoting parents’ involvement in their children’s education as their children’s first teachers and most powerful influence on their academic success.

Case management services
The staff also address other needs of the families, including social, mental and parent/family development by building on existing community resources.

“Through the services staff provide,” Julie said, “families gain more self confidence.”

Activities may include helping moms and dads at parent/teacher conferences, demonstrating how to prepare nutritious meals or pointing them in the direction of community resources.

“The full range of a family’s needs are supported,” Julie added.
