CSIU Program Highlight:
CSC 35th Anniversary

Center for Schools and Communities (CSC) will celebrate its 35th anniversary in September. In preparation, CSC shared a short video at CSIU’s Professional Leadership Day (PLD) highlighting some of the people, projects and partners that have helped CSC grow to serve more than 17,000 schools, communities, families and students.

Dr. Tammy Campbell

Districts Plan for Student Engagement and Voice

Dr. Tammy Campbell, a 25-year K-12 educator, former nationally recognized Federal Way Public Schools superintendent and CEO of The Scholar First equity consulting firm, offered a professional development opportunity focused on fostering a student-centered culture in educational institutions to more than 50 CSIU-region district and building leaders. From the state of Washington, Dr. Campbell led an engaging and insightful session where leaders gained invaluable insights into creating learning environments that prioritize the needs and interests of each student. Her expertise empowers leaders to identify ways to elevate student (or learner) voices while recognizing their impact on changing the culture in a school and throughout the district. Dr. Campbell’s commitment to continuous improvement extends beyond the initial sessions, providing follow-up opportunities throughout the year, including two in-person sessions and two virtual sessions focused on problems of practice where leaders can co-construct their learning within the CSIU region. This professional development opportunity is being offered to all school leaders in the CSIU region at no cost. It has the potential to equip them with practical tools and strategies to nurture a student-centric educational setting.

STEM Camp

STEM Camps

The CSIU’s Girls STEM Camp 2023 welcomed 20 enthusiastic young minds that delved into a week-long summer of exploration and innovation. Fueled by a Makerspace mindset and cutting-edge Glowforge technology, the girls immersed themselves in various activities. From mastering vinyl cutting and circuitry to honing coding skills, they fearlessly embraced the realms of technology.

Moreover, the camp didn't stop at digital domains; the girls also connected with nature through agriculture, delving into the intricacies of sustainable farming and visiting three local farms. Additionally, they explored weather with the meteorologist at WBRE/WYOU Eyewitness News and environmental science by understanding their impact through the Susquehanna River Walk and devising eco-friendly solutions. This empowering experience cultivated not just STEM skills but also a profound appreciation for the world around them. The future shines brighter with these trailblazing young women leading the way.

Strategic Plan Update

Strategic Plan

During the past year, CSIU has dedicated significant efforts to achieve its Strategic Plan goals. Some of those accomplishments include increasing professional learning opportunities internally and for CSIU-region districts, expanding partnerships in workforce development, restructuring departments for organizational efficiency, implementing a wellness initiative to decrease health insurance claims, and succession-plan development. This work has leveraged CSIU's core values and forges a path to sustain our current standing and propel the organization toward greater achievements.
