CSIU Highlight:
CSIU and WBRE's Children First Initiative

As a sponsor of WBRE’s NEPA’s Children First initiative, CSIU is helping to celebrate regional youth and the programs that support them. This initiative aligns with CSIU’s core values of service, excellence, equity, and innovation and allows the CSIU to communicate to the public the variety of services provided and available. It’s also an opportunity for program participants and local districts to tell their success stories!

The information below describes the initiative and can be found on WNEP’s NEPA’s Children First webpage:

NEPA’s Children First is an initiative to help kids get all they need to succeed. We’ll be recognizing their amazing accomplishments, tackling important educational issues, and offering parenting and mentoring tips. NEPA’s Children First has four major initiatives to make sure kids are getting the recognition they deserve.

These initiatives include:

  • Here’s To You Kid: We are highlighting all the great things kids are doing in Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania. If you know an extraordinary kid, let us know by emailing us at HeresToYouKid@pahomepage.com

Meet other extraordinary kids we’ve profiled.

  • Paola’s Parenting Playbook: The ‘Parenting Playbook’, featuring by Paola Giangiocomo, will let you hear from experts and how they recommend approaching the tough subjects with your children.

See stories from Paola's Parenting Playbook

  • A Little Love: So many children are looking for a permanent home and family…a family just like yours. Each month Eyewitness News, working with the Statewide Adoption & Permanency Network, introduces you to some extraordinary kids who could change your life.

  • Athlete of the Week: Eyewitness News is looking to highlight young athletes in Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania.

Governor's School Attendee

Mackenzie Vasbinder, a Mifflinburg Area High School student, participated in the prestigious Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences (PGSS) at Carnegie Mellon University.

The PGSS is a rigorous, five-week program that provides talented Pennsylvania rising high school seniors with enrichment experiences in the sciences and mathematics and encourages them to pursue careers in science and technology. Only 72 students statewide were accepted into this year’s program from among 403 applicants. Students accepted into the Governor’s School for the Sciences are among the top achievers at their schools.

While attending the Governor’s School, all students live on campus in Carnegie Mellon University dormitories and take specially designed lecture courses in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics. In addition, students participate in laboratory courses and engage in team research projects. They can also take elective courses, participate in field trips, attend special lectures and seminars, and interact with university faculty.

The applications for 2024 PGSS are now available. For more information, please click here.

In-service Day: Reigniting Connections

The CSIU and district partners provided regional educational staff with enriching professional development opportunities on Monday, Oct. 9, 2023. These events featured two conference- style gatherings, one hosted by Milton Area High School for staff working in grades K-5 and physical education with keynote speaker John Perricone and one at Lewisburg Area High School for staff working in grades 6-12 with Dr. Lisa Lucas as the keynote speaker. More than 50 breakout sessions were held across the two schools.

Southern Columbia Area High School hosted a regional Family Consumer Science collaboration session.

In addition, music educators explored specialized opportunities through the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) in a session held at the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit building in Montandon.

Throughout the day, more than 630 participants engaged in various breakout sessions designed to enhance staff practices and foster valuable collaboration.
