Superintendent Retreat and Visit with Dr. Mumin

Superintendent Retreat at Penn State

A group of 34 educational leaders from the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit (CSIU) and the Schuylkill Intermediate Unit regions participated in the 2023 Fall Leadership Conference in State College, on Nov. 1–3.

The high-quality professional development event commenced with a tour of Penn State’s Eric Barron Innovation Hub and an in-depth exploration of the DiSC assessment, a tool commonly used in professional settings to measure interpersonal behavior.

On the second day, attendees participated in a Strategic Leadership Workshop titled "Intersection of Leadership & Athletics" on the Penn State Campus. The workshop, facilitated by Meighan Julbert, Director for Development and Enrichment in Intercollegiate Athletics, and Dr. Carl Ohlson, former Assistant Athletic Director for Performance Psychology Services,  focused on the vital aspects of composure, communication, and culture, especially as they relate to team building and leadership, within the educational environment or in the context of athletics.

On the final day, a legal updates session was led by Attorney Carl Beard, who addressed issues affecting educational institutions.

Pennsylvania Department of Education Secretary Khalid Mumin and Deputy Secretary Carrie Rowe shared insights with the group on priorities and initiatives to benefit school districts that the department is pursuing.

ICPS Partners

Stephanie Colvin-Roy, Training and Organizational Development Associate at the Center for Schools and Communities, traveled to Dorset in the rural Southwest of England.

Stephanie met with the International Convention of Psychological Science (ICPS) Strategic Partners from the Dorset Council Educational Psychology Department for the I Can Problem Solve program. She visited primary and middle schools throughout Dorset to observe and provide coaching in classrooms where ICPS is being implemented.

It was a wonderful experience to see children engaged with the ICPS lesson and hear about their improved interpersonal and self-regulation skills. Atlantic Academy in Portland, England, has chosen a whole school approach with ICPS implementation to address their high-need students in the top 10% of England’s most economically stressed populations. Portland has already seen improved student self-regulation with its year two students in just a few weeks of ICPS lessons. A research study will track behavioral and academic patterns among Atlantic Academy students following ICPS implementation. This new research strengthens ICPS program success and fidelity overseas and in the US. The Dorset Educational Psychology ICPS team are experts in child development, and together, we can update the remaining ICPS curriculum to make it more relevant and engaging for today’s youth.

In addition to the current ICPS program implementation, Stephanie met with Dorset Council’s early childhood education directors to discuss implementing ICPS with the Incredible Years/Incredible Beginnings program. A partnership between these two programs can increase family and school connections and improve young children's problem-solving and  social and emotional development.

Special Education Toy Adaptation Day

The CSIU hosted its inaugural Toy Adaptation Day on Oct. 27.

Millville Area School District and Columbia-Montour Area Vocational-Technical School engineering students joined in disassembling and modifying toys using larger 3D-printed switches, making them accessible to peers with physical disabilities. Students from Bloomsburg Area School District’s autism support classroom, and CSIU’s autism support students assisted with testing and preparing the toys for delivery to teachers.

Typically, adapted toys are purchased at double or triple the cost of regular toys. This project has allowed students with disabilities to access affordable adapted toys, a resource they might not otherwise have had.

Check out all the photos from Toy Adaptation Day!
