Children with Disabilities and Special Dietary Needs

  • Schools participating in a federal school meal program (National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, Special Milk Program, and Afterschool Snack Program) are required to make reasonable accommodations for children who are unable to eat school meals because of a disability that restricts the diet.

It is the policy of the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit to ensure that it does not discriminate against any person based on a protected status or classification as identified by law or herein in admission to or access to programs, services or activities offered by the Intermediate Unit. The Intermediate Unit will ensure that individuals with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate in the USDA Child Nutrition Programs and have appropriate access to facilities and areas where meals are provided.

A parent/guardian requesting special dietary accommodations for a student with a disability that restricts the diet must provide the Medical Statement for Special Dietary Needs. Please reference PDE Children with Disabilities and Special Dietary Needs for more information about requesting accommodation for school meals and the meal service for students with disabilities, which can be found below.
