Local legislators and regional superintendents gathered to celebrate the start of a new legislative term and discuss key regional education initiatives at a Legislative Breakfast held on January 16 at the CSIU central office.
Senator Lynda Schlegel-Culver, Representative Michael Stender, and legislative staff representing Senator Gene Yaw, Representative Stephanie Borowicz and Representative David Rowe attended the event.
Superintendents from across the region shared insights on critical educational programs, including expanded afterschool and summer initiatives, workforce development efforts, innovative graduation pathways, and clubs designed to support students interested in firefighting careers. Their remarks underscored the importance of continued collaboration between schools and policymakers to support student success.
Senator Lynda Schlegel-Culver, the new Pennsylvania Senate Education Committee Chair, provided remarks on her leadership role and emphasized her commitment to advancing education policy.
A special highlight of the event was the presentation of handcrafted wooden coaster sets created by the Work Foundations+ program students to legislators.
The Legislative Breakfast provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen partnerships between education and government entities and promote a shared focus on opportunities that empower students and communities.
Luzerne County Community College Visit
Luzerne County Community College (LCCC) President John Yudichak joined CSIU leaders on January 30 to explore educational opportunities across the area. Special Assistant to President Doug Palmieri, Strategic Outreach Maria DeLucca, and Vice President of Academic Affairs Mary Lou D'Allegro were also in attendance.
The tour began at the CSIU LPN Career Center, where discussions focused on pathways for LPN Career Center graduates to continue their education through LCCC’s Nursing Program.
Next, the group visited the Watsontown Children’s Center to view some of CSIU’s special education, early childhood education, and Head Start programs. The Watsontown Children’s Center also serves as the Greater Susquehanna Center of LCCC.
As a final stop, the group visited Columbia-Montour Area Vocational-Technical School (CMVT), recently renovated to enhance career and technical education. President Yudichak toured the mechatronics and electrical occupations classrooms and learned about the school’s new Information Technology and Cybersecurity programs, launching in 2025.
This regional tour highlighted the strong partnerships between educational institutions and the growing opportunities for students in technical, healthcare, and early childhood education fields.
