The CSIU is one of more than 550 education service agencies in the United States, and is a member of the Association of Educational Service Agencies (AESA).

The Pennsylvania Association of Intermediate Units is a collaboration of the 29 intermediate units of Pennsylvania. Established in 1971 by the Pennsylvania General Assembly, intermediate units operate as regional educational service agencies providing cost-effective, management-efficient programs to Pennsylvania's 500 public school districts and more than 2,400 non-public and private schools. In addition, intermediate units serve as liaison agencies between school districts and the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
