[MILTON, PA] – On Monday, October 9, 2023, educational staff in the Central Susquehanna region had the unique opportunity to participate in a day of enriching professional development. The CSIU, in partnership with district collaborators, was pleased to host the 2023 Regional In-Service Day in the theme of Reigniting Connections, designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of the dedicated professionals who shape the future of our students.
The Regional In-Service Day is a significant educational event that brings together staff from across the region to engage in a wide range of professional development sessions, fostering collaboration and enhancing their practices. More than 630 educational staff participated in this event.
Highlights of the Event:
- Multiple Locations: The event was held simultaneously at two main sites featuring conference-style gatherings, Milton Area High School and Lewisburg Area High School, to ensure accessibility for a broader range of educational staff. The Milton Area High School gathering focused on staff in grades K-5 and Physical Education, while the Lewisburg Area High School gathering focused on staff in grades 6-12. Additional locations included the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit building (for PMEA sessions) and Southern Columbia Area High School (Family Consumer Science collaboration).
- Student Performance: Participants attending the Milton Area High School event were treated to a captivating violin performance by Michaela Williams, a sophomore from Southern Columbia Area High School. Her exceptional talent added a touch of artistry and creativity to the day's proceedings.
- Specialized Sessions: In addition to the general conference-style sessions, music educators had the opportunity to explore specialized workshops through the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) held at the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit building in Montandon.
- Family Consumer Science Collaboration: Southern Columbia Area High School hosted a regional Family Consumer Science collaboration session, providing an ideal platform for educators in this field to exchange ideas and practices.
- Breakout Sessions: Throughout the day, participants had access to a variety of 50 breakout sessions covering topics crucial to the education sector, with the goal of enhancing staff practices and fostering valuable opportunities for collaboration.
- Keynote Speakers: Best-selling author (Zen and the Art of Public School Teaching), teacher, national and internationally sought inspirational speaker John Perricone presented at Milton Area High School.
Dr. Lisa Lucas, Professor in the College of Education at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, a speaker/trainer that provides workshops on Engaging Learners, and a professional coach that specializes in helping others achieve balance- finding the median between working to live and living to work presented at Lewisburg Area High School.
“Everyone played an important role in making this day a reality. It's really inspiring when you consider the efforts involved. From our district and CSIU teams to the dedicated presenters who traveled to be with us and the hardworking facilities and food service departments, everyone came together to ensure the day ran smoothly. Overall, it was not only a great day for professional development but also an amazing opportunity to reconnect with friends and colleagues,” said Dr. Anthony Serafini, CSIU Director of Professional Development
The CSIU and its district partners are committed to the ongoing development and success of educational staff, and this event was just one example of their dedication to empowering educators and providing valuable learning opportunities.
