CSIU moving forward with Watsontown elementary purchase
MILTON — The Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit (CSIU) is moving forward with its plans to purchase the former Watsontown Elementary School building from the Warrior Run School District.
The CSIU board this week approved a $610,000 “agreement of sale” with the school district, pending final review and approval of both parties legal council.
The agreement must still be approved by the Warrior Run school board, which next meets Monday, Nov. 20.
This week’s CSIU board meeting agenda noted funds for the purchase are available through the organization’s capital reserve budget.
“CSIU hopes to complete the sale over the next three months,” Dr. Bernadette Boerckel, CSIU’s chief outreach officer, wrote in an email to The Standard-Journal.
“Our plans to use the facility as an early learning center and a home for the Luzerne County Community College, Greater Susquehanna Valley Center, have not changed,” she continued. “We have been in communication with LCCC and they have expressed their interest in staying at the site.”
The school district vacated the building at the end of the 2015-2016 school year as it realigned its grades. The district currently rents out part of the former school to CSIU for early childhood education programming, and to the LCCC.
The district also closed the former Turbotville Elementary School building at the start of this school year as a new elementary school was opened on the middle school/high school campus. The Turbotville building remains on the market.
